Vealer steers reach $5/kg

A PEN of vealer steers reached 502.2c/kg this week in Grafton.

They were sold by Stan Kozik weighing 115kgs taking $778.41 per head.

There were 450 head yarded at Grafton Fat Cattle Sale this week.

Numbers were steady for the first sale of 2017 with all descriptions well represented.

The export market was fully firm to slightly dearer with all export buyers in attendance.

Vealers couldn't follow the same trend and were down 10-20c/kg.

However, there was solid demand for quality restockers with light Angus weaner steers achieving over the $5.00/kg mark.

260 cattle were sold at Lismore Saleyards on Tuesday. Most of the vealers on offer were in good condition and weighting heavier than the meat processors prefer.

Prime vealers weighing between 175 & 240 kg sold from $3.05 to $3.36/kg.

Yearling heifers weighing between 260 & 340kg sold from $2.90 to $3.20/kg and steers $3.10 to $3.84/kg depending on breed and confirmation.

Heavy angus vealer steers off clunes were bought by western restockers $3.76/kg, $973. The quality of the weaners this week was not as good as last week, but some very good heavy lines were yarded. Darby Tickles Simmental steers topped at $1127. The cow market was again on a par with last week, with the heavy end selling in the $2.10 to $2.30/kg.

Robert Tillmans Angus cow sold for $2.30/kg returning $1450.

Keerrong Shorthorn breeder Stephen Field's top cow sold for $2.24/kg, $1322.

At our Store Cattle sale this Saturday a good line up of steers, heifers and cows with calves will be on offer. The feature of this sale will be the dispersal of Robert Duncan's santa X hereford breeding herd. The cows are principally on their second and third calf with sappy Angus calves at foot.

451 cattle yarded for the first sale of 2017 at Grafton. Grown cattle opened up full firm on last year to see bullocks sell to 296c/kg and cows to 249c/kg. Vealers also sold firm topping at 350c/kg. Restockers were once again very strong, bidding on most lots. Angus weaner steers sold to 504c/kg. Our next Special Store Cattle Sale will be on Thursday, January 19.

Miller and Carrew -Reid cows sold to 242c/kg, weighed 510kg and returned $1230/hd. Ken Watters santa yearling sold to 338c/kg, and returned $1143/hd to restockers.

Sutherland Bros yearlings sold to 354c/kg, and returned $1076/hd to restockers.

RK & BP Holmes yearling sold to 394c/kg, and returned $902/hd to restockers.

BT & LA Duck vealer steers sold to 350c/kg, and returned $1008/hd to restockers.

NF & RL Thompson vealers sold to 338c/kg, weighed 198kg and returned $670/hd.

Sharon Fisher vealers sold to 338c/kg, weighed 235kg and returned $788/hd.
