THE fine quality of Northern Rivers goats has left a lasting impression on dairy goat judge Daniel Griffiths.
Mr Griffiths, a Toowoomba-based goat breeder who exhibits animals at large shows such as the Royal Queensland Show, judged the North Coast National Dairy Goat Exhibition earlier in October.
He commended local breeders on the quality of their goats.
"The Australian milans, which are an Australian-developed breed, are very impressive here," he said. "I awarded one the Senior Champion."
Nimbin goat breeder Rachelle White exhibited several animals and was proud to win Best Udder of Show.
The dairy goats were judged on specific characteristics at the show.
"They've got to have breadth through the chest, nice body depth and good feet and legs," Mr Griffiths said.
"You don't want the dairy goats to be too big and heavy shouldered; they need to be finer and more refined."
He also said there were benefits to consuming goat dairy products.
"Goat milk is more easily digested because you don't get that layer of cream at the top," he said.
"Goat products are actually the most widely consumed animal food products in the world."
