BUYING a large Toyota just got a smidge cheaper with Australia's best-selling brand passing on the full benefits of a higher Luxury Car Tax threshold to customers.

It means with the start of the tax year retail prices have fallen by $284 for the entire LandCruiser 200 series range, four Prado variants, AWD Kluger Grande and the Tarago Ultima V6 people mover. The 2WD Kluger Grande is now also priced below the threshold, with a $267 reduction seen for this model.

While announcing the price reductions, Toyota renewed its call for the abolition of the Luxury Car Tax which it has called "inequitable".

The Luxury Car Tax was introduced to protect local manufacturing by slapping an extra charge on car imports above a certain amount. From July 1 2016, that means any car over $64,132 is subject to a Luxury Car Tax fee, or if the car is what the tax office deems "fuel-efficient" (by returning under 7-litres/100km) the extra fee kicks in at $75,526.

CHEAPER: LandCruiser Sahara now $113,216 the petrol and $118,216 the turbo diesel. $284 off both...every little helps!

Always a controversial tax, voices in the industry speaking out against the LCT have become louder as local manufacturing dries up. From 2017 there will be no local car manufacturing to protect, plus there's the enduring argument that other "luxury" go

Toyota's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said: "This is an inequitable tax because it applies only to vehicles and not to other high-end goods such as luxury boats, jewellery and watches."

"It is unfair that such a discriminatory tax hits consumers who are already contributing significantly to government coffers through GST, stamp duty and registration fees when buying a new car, as well as hefty taxes on fuel," he said.

"Last year, more than 13,500 new Toyota owners were hit by this inefficient, punitive and poorly designed measure."
