A RESEARCH initiative with the Department of Main Roads and Transport, University of the Sunshine Coast and the Silver Fox Community are calling for 30 participants who are car drivers aged between 70-75 years of age, and 100 adult children with parents in this age bracket to research senior driving habits.
The research, aimed at these two Sunshine Coast groups looks to recognize best driving practices by identifying alternate travel routes and transport modes to advance safer road, mobility and independence.
Adult children of parents in this age-group, are called upon to join the research to assist their parent's plan for that point in the future when driving skills may be affected by age-related impairments. Whilst driving skills should not be measured by age, (indeed greater years of driving experience on the roads actually makes older drivers less likely to be in an accident), vision, movement and the ability to process information can be impaired over time.
In keeping with the United Nations' resolution, a "Decade of Action for Road Safety", and the World Health Organization's "Criteria for Age Friendly Cities and Communities", the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Silver Fox Community have identified and initiated an innovative research project funded by the Queensland Government and Department of Main Roads and Transport.
A healthy and connected community relies upon inclusion and independence. The Sunshine Coast is entering a period of burgeoning growth. For social, individual and economic success, safer roads, driving practices and alternate transport options are critical. The research findings will inform the State and Local Government, Department of Main Roads and Transport, police, emergency services and insurance providers on supporting the older driver and their families toward a more mobile and inclusive community.
In May the University of the Sunshine Coast and Silver Fox Community will prepare volunteers for this engaging and rewarding research project. 30 volunteers are required of drivers aged between 70-75 years of age, and 100 adult children with parents in this age bracket.
