THERE is plenty of excitement in the air about the 2013 Mackay Show and particularly the sugarcane competition and exhibition.
There's a whisper on the rumour mill that Mackay could be in store for a new sugar pavilion, although this will depend on the weather. Either way, this year's exhibition and competition are promising to shine a positive light on the sugar industry.
There are new trophies to win, including the Ian "Toby" Watson Memorial Trophy for the winner of Sugar Producer of the Year.
This is in addition to the first prize of $500, sponsored by Hardy Spicer, and a first-time second prize of $400, sponsored by QSL.
The Sugarcane Subcommittee, in conjunction with the Mackay Show Association, can now boast an increased prize pool of more than $10,000.
Growers have been encouraged to show their support for their industry and this annual showcase and submit their entries for classes 2-4 to be eligible, if successful, to take home a share of this prize pool.
Entries will close on Friday, May 24, for the following classes:
- Class 2: Show Block Competition;
- Class 3A: Best Farming Practice in Ratoon Cane Green and Burnt;
- Class 3B: Best First-time Entrant in the Burnt or Green Cane Class;
- Class 4: Best Farming Practice in Plant Cane.
These classes have great sponsors - Rabobank, Elders, CropCare, Syngenta, Vanderfield and Ravensdown - and collectively offer a prize pool valued at close to $2000.
Growers seeking information in relation to the competition should phone Dick Luscombe on 4952 2062 or 0407 674 491 or chief steward Darrell McLennan on 0427 592 235.
