AS FIRES continue to burn out of control around the state, Red Cross is calling for urgent donations to support our response and recovery efforts in bushfire affected communities across NSW.
Red Cross continues to help more than 400 people devastated by the fires, with many homes still at risk.
More than a hundred staff and volunteers are currently involved in the response and additional trained volunteers are on their way to the bushfire areas to provide support now and in the coming days.
Local Red Cross staff and volunteers are supporting fire affected communities at three relief centres, located at Springwood, Dalston and Raymond Terrace, registering the names of people affected by the fires so that concerned family and friends can check on their wellbeing and whereabouts.
Volunteers are also providing support and practical assistance to evacuees, including emotional support, information and referrals to recovery services.
Red Cross regional manager Danny Croucher lives in Springwood and recently was responding to the needs of both the community and his own family.
"My son James, was evacuated in the afternoon to St Thomas Aquinas primary school. Although we knew he was relatively safe, not being able to pick him up was stressful. We were finally all back together around 9.30 last night, which was a huge relief," He said.
Red Cross state manager of Emergency Services Diana Bernardi said Red Cross is currently working closely with Department of Families and Community Services, local councils and emergency services to help affected communities during a difficult time.
"The impact of these fires on children will be huge. They have been eye witnesses to the chaos and trauma of these fires. Red Cross has really helpful information on how to cope after a fire for both kids and adults. We really encourage people to go to our website to download our 'Coping' booklet and 'Returning home after a bushfire' information sheet which provide important tips for recovery," she said.
