FOR the first time in a long time the smart money is in breeding rather than trading cattle as Queensland and New South Wales producers attempt to rebuild their drought-ravaged herds.

GDL stud stock manager Harvey Weyman-Jones says the limited supply of cattle across Australia is seeing a dramatic increase in the profitability of putting calves on the ground.

"Anyone with a seasonal break will be looking for good bulls this selling season as they use improved genetics to improve returns in the current market,” Mr Weyman-Jones said.

On Monday, September 5, 124 bulls from eight breeds will be offered by combined agents GDL and Elders at the Balonne Bull Sale at Myall Plains, Nindigully.

Mr Weyman-Jones says the sale attracts a strong contingent of repeat buyers because it has become known as a one-stop-shop for cattle producers looking for proven performance.

"We've improved the catalogue information available to help producers select the right type of bull for their operation,” he said.

The Balonne Bull Sale catalogue includes 77 angus bulls, 16 santa gertrudis, 8 droughtmaster, 8 charolais, 6 simmental, 3 blonde d'aquitaine bulls, 4 charbray and 3 south devon.

Mr Weyman-Jones says the easiest way to improve a cow herd is to buy better quality bulls.

"If you can increase the weight of your weaners by 50 kilograms, your sale price will increase by $150 to $200 more per head which is pretty much all profit,” he said.

"Across all the breeds on offer at the Balonne Bull Sale the emphasis is on producing carcase, high weight gain and easy doing cattle with good temperament.”

Vendors at the Balonne Shire's only multi-vendor sale include Carabar Angus Stud Meandarra, Mooroobie Angus Goondiwindi, Dangarfield Santa Gertrudis Stud Taroom, Swan Hill Santa Gertrudis Stud Blackall, Elkay 2 Droughtmaster Stud Bungunya, Kilkenny Charolais Taroom, Blue Dog Simmentals Wandoan, Bottle Tree Blondes Cinnabar Gympie and Bolinda South Devon Gunnedah.

The Balonne Bull Sale will begin at 11am on Monday, September 5 at Myall Plains, Nindigully, for a catalogue ring GDL on 07 4669 6955 or log onto gdlrural.com.au.
