IT'S a style of music that has been around for over a hundred years but it is not easy to define.
Jazz is known for its improvisation, unique syncopated rhythmic patterns (where jazz gets its swing), and distinctive tone and blues notes (bent).
Its roots can be found in the musical traditions of both Africa and Europe but jazz first evolved in the United States of America where it developed from a blend of ragtime, marches, blues, brass and other kinds of music.
Jazz spread from the United States to many parts of the world, and today there are more than two dozen distinct jazz styles, including traditional jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, fusion and jazz rock.
