FIRST time exhibitors Angela and Peter Ellis, of Nobby, tasted success at the Warwick Show on Friday, winning the supreme champion single prime lamb and champion pen of three prime lambs.
Operating Donnellis Dorper Stud, the Ellis family run approximately 120 black faced dorpers on their Nobby property and was over the moon about their first time showing at Warwick.
Mr Ellis said they entered one pen of three lambs and a few singles, but it was their outstanding pen of lambs that attracted the judge's eye and the broad ribbons. The supreme prime lamb was chosen from their winning pen.
Mrs Ellis said their stud had been established for two years and also had enjoyed success at the recent Inglewood Show, taking out reserve champion in the pen of three prime lambs.
"Our flock is based on Kelly's Park ewes from Glenn Timbs at Leyburn, and our stud rams are Amarula blood from Gravesend in New South Wales," Mrs Ellis said.
The Ellis's champion lambs averaged 43.7kg, with the Supreme Champion Lamb fetching $225 at auction during the sheep sale which followed the presentation of trophies on Friday afternoon at the show.
The top money was paid by Carey Bros of Warwick, with the remaining two lambs in the champion pen selling for $190 to T and R Pastoral.
The champion pen of wethers, exhibited by Ian and Jackie Cullen, was also purchased by T and R Pastoral.
Judge Chris Lawler, of Allora, had a tough job judging the quality line-up of 120 sheep and lambs. Mr Lawlor described the champion pen as "good trade lambs ideal for the butcher shop trade. It was a very good line-up of lambs and I congratulate all the owners," he said.
Warwick Show prime sheep and lambs chief steward Brett Shelley thanked all the exhibitors and the good array of buyers who attended the sale.
