THE best family SUV in the world.

As far as bold claims go, it's a pretty impressive one from Land Rover when introducing its all-new Discovery model at the Paris Motor Show.

It's an eagerly anticipated model both globally and for Australia, with the premium large SUV our second biggest seller in the above $70,000 segment last year, shifting nearly 3000 units. Only the BMW X5 trumped it for sales in 2015.

The new Discovery goes on sale in Australia from July 2017, with the entry level Td4 SE 7 Seat costing from $81,590 before on-roads.

The Disco's renowned boxy shape has predictably been dropped in favour of the sleeker and more modern styling as seen on other recent Land Rover and Range Rover offerings, but trademark family cues like the stepped roofline - to optimise passenger headroom - have survived.

Never one to hold back on the superlatives, Land Rover says the new Discovery has "unrivalled capability and technology like no other" while "enabling Land Rover customers to live the lifestyle they aspire to". All the while it combines "British desirability with an unstoppable spirit of adventure".

Backing up its claims are the seven full-sized adult seats, which rather wonderfully can be configured from your smartphone using the world-first remote Intelligent Seat Fold technology.

Land Rover says it features semi-autonomous safety tech, premium interior with 10-inch touchscreen and plenty of smart storage features. Its unit of measurement? Ipads of course.

You can fit four iPads (or a pair of two-litre drinks bottles) in a hidden cubby storage in the central console, plus five iPads can fit in the armrest cubby. Nine iPads for seven passengers? Well, a couple of spare never hurt for long journeys.

A more conventional unit of measurement - litres of luggage space - reveals an up to 2406-litres cargo volume with seats folded.

The new Disco is 480kg than the current model thanks to its lightweight aluminium construction, while it will tow a best-in-class 3500kg and help you along with a semi-autonomous tow assist to take the stress out of reversing manoeuvres.

Ground clearance is an impressive 283mm, and wading depth capability an incredible 900mm. For you trailblazers too, approach angle is 34 degrees, breakover angle is 27.5 degrees, and departure angle 30 degrees when the air suspension is in Off Road setting.

The Discovery badge has been with us for 26 years now, and over its four generations has sold over 1.2-million units worldwide.
