THOUSANDS of future jobs in the Toowoomba region could be at risk if the government goes ahead with its plan to abolish the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.
There are six major solar and wind power project in the pipeline in the Toowoomba region.
Analysis by Australian Conservation Foundation shows 4694 direct jobs would be created by the projects and 2731MW of renewable power.
The majority of the jobs would come from the $1 billion Bulli Creek Solar Farm planned for Millmerran.
There are two project across the Darling Downs on a short-list for $100 million of investment as part of ARENA funding, the 106.8MW Origin Energy Limited solar farm near Dalby and the 25MW Canadian Solar Oakey Solar Farm at Oakey.
Hannah Aulby from ACF said any move to abolish the grant body could jeopardise projects and leave Australia technologically-behind other countries that are investing in renewables.
The government is hoping to save $6.5 billion with its omnibus bill including $1.3 billion from abolishing the grant body. Representatives from the companies declined to comment about ARENA.
