KEPPEL MP Bruce Young has disputed claims that a live export market out of Port Alma would impact on local jobs at Teys Meatworks.
He said there are many local producers who cannot get their cattle into abattoirs because they are booked out.
"Live export provides another mechanism where farmers, who are doing it extremely tough, can market their cattle," he said.
"The reality is we have 80 producers in my area, including cattle from Yeppoon, travelling as we speak to Townsville for live export."
Mr Young said about six to 10% of cattle in Australia are sent using live export, which still allowed for a very healthy market for abattoirs.
Other stories about Port Alma live export proposal:
"The price producers are getting for produce is not keeping pace with the general rise in costs," he said.
"We have to have a healthy industry where farm gate prices are competitive, otherwise we'll lose the next generation going into farming."
Mr Young described the MLA figures which forecast there will 2.5 to 3million fewer cattle in the market as a real concern which the LNP was trying to address.
