With these words, the new LNP government has bid a less-than-fond farewell to the controversial Waste Levy.
The levy was a charge of $35 a tonne introduced by the Labor government, which applied on commercial, industrial, construction and demolition waste - but had to be collected by local councils.
Yesterday Local Government minister David Crisafulli confirmed the levy's days were numbered.
"The Waste Levy was condemned by councils throughout the state. Not only did it consume staff time for a questionable outcome, it was a cost councils had to pass on."
"That levy will be removed by July 1, 2012. Good riddance," he said.
Until then, however, council will still have to collect the levy.
"Until the state makes the change, council is forced to continue to collect the levy," said Fraser Coast Regional Council mayor Gerard O'Connell.
"The levy has been a big impost on business and council," he said. "It has cost council around $200,000 to administer collecting the levy, that money could have been used on many other vital projects such as footpaths."
