HOLDEN'S Astra sedan, based on the same architecture as the all-news hatchback version, will launch in Australia this May as a replacement for the Cruze sedan.

Developed in Europe and manufactured in Korea, Holden said the new Astra sedan, based on the Chevrolet Cruze, had "significant engineering input from Holden" at the brand's Lang Lang proving ground in Victoria.

Showing the car's global nature, it was styled in North America but received "bespoke styling treatment from the renowned GM Australia design team, with a sophisticated front grille and fascia to give the Astra range a more cohesive appearance."

No specification details or pricing have been announced by Holden, but expect the Astra sedan to retail close to the Hatch version's new entry level cost of $21,490.

The Astra sedan's reveal follows news that Holden was cutting the price of its all-new Astra hatch model with immediate effect, despite it being on sale for a little over a month.
