Groundwater hot topic for meetings

POTENTIAL groundwater impacts from mines in the Galilee Basin will be the major discussion topic at two public meetings next week, held by the Lock the Gate Alliance.

After commissioning the Draining the Lifeblood report, looking at possible cumulative impacts of mining on Galilee Basin communities, spokeswoman Ellie Smith said the meetings would be a chance to share the results with locals.

"These meetings are intended as an opportunity for local people to get together to discuss the potential impacts of these mines on the region's groundwater and what can be done about it," she said.

"We welcome everyone in the region to come along, whether they've signed make-good agreements, access agreements or not, whether they're in the footprint of the mine, a neighbour, or in town."

Ms Smith said they were also concerned about the effects of the mines on agricultural land and bushland.
