Funds for groups to improve farm water use

FUNDING to improve water use efficiency for irrigation would inject $8 million of State Government funding into major rural industry groups.

Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps this week said it aimed to help irrigators reduce the energy consumption associated with pumping and make better use of on-farm water supplies.

He said the funding would provide financial support to groups providing services to irrigators, including Growcom, Queensland Canegrowers Organisation, Queensland Dairyfarmers Organisation, Queensland Turf Producers Association, Flower Association of Australia and Nursery and Garden Industry Queensland.

"Queensland's farmers are already setting a benchmark for water efficiency … (but) water use efficiency is a moving target that we must continually improve on," Queensland Farmers Federation CEO Dan Galligan said.

"Improving water use efficiency helps irrigators harness water and put it to its best use and helps us make sure the water we get in the wet times is put to efficient use in dry times."
