MICK Fanning has a genuine shot at a third world title in Portugal after eleven time world champion Kelly Slater was knocked out by Brazilian wildcard Frederico Morais in round two of the Rip Curl Pro.
As the years have gone by and Mr Slater has lost more and more hair, nicknames have developed both in Australia and overseas for the greatest surfer of all time.
Old Baldy, Bald Eagle and most recently Alien Egg Skirt, the later referring to the similarity between a boiled egg if it were to wear a traditional grass skirt and the king's head of hair if it were left unkept.
The Alien reference is simply a reminder of his super human, out of this world ability on a surfboard.
Anyway the point to the story is Tweed's Mick Fanning is now in the driver's seat heading into the last event of the world tour in Hawaii, he may even be able to seal the title in Portugal.
A third title would put Fanning one title short of fellow countrymen Mark Richards, who dominated the early 80's world tour.
Only two other Aussie males have two world titles, Tom Carroll and Damien Hardman.
