UPDATE: FKG Group has dumped its plans to build an abattoir on Witmack Rd in Wellcamp but still intends to build a meatworks in the region.
The company had proposed to build an $80 million meatworks but on Monday shelved those plans.
FKG group manager of property development Dallas Hunter said the abattoir was planned near its technology park Pulse Data Centre but was "incompatible" with that area.
He said the company had lodged an application to withdraw its development application with Toowoomba Regional Council.
But the company hasn't given up on the project and intends to lodge a new development application once a suitable location can be found.
"We still intend to lodge an application for a new site at some time in the future.
"We're working on options, there is still demand for it. We're still getting inquiries.
"It's a live project."
EARLIER: Plans for a controversial abattoir for west of Toowoomba have been dumped by developer FKG Group.
The company had proposed to build an $80 million meatworks on Witmack Rd in Wellcamp.
The abattoir was opposed by some residents including Chrissie Bach who called for it to be built further west in Cecil Plains, and environmental advocate David Pascoe.
On Monday FKG Group officially withdrew a development application for the project lodged with Toowoomba Regional Council.
Opponents to the project had raised concerns about noise, odour and planning issues.
FKG group manager of property development Dallas Hunter had defended the project, saying the latest technology from Europe would ensure that there were no external impacts.
The withdrawal comes after the developer scrapped a cold-storage facility in December last year that was to service the abattoir.
Ms Bach said of the withdrawal that "common sense and logic had prevailed".
FKG Group was contacted for comment.
