UPDATED REPORT, 4.48pm: THE bushfire at Commercial Rd Murwillumbah, caused by an out-of-control cane fire, has been extinguished.
Murwillumbah Rural Fire Service is on hand to ensure the blaze, which was two hectares in size, does not rekindle.
The fire hit several bamboo thickets, causing loud cracking noises to echo through the cane fields.
Farmer Greg O'Connor was the man burning the cane when the fire raged out of control.
He was trundling around the cane fields on a tractor checking the perimeter of his mother's property.
"I was burning a cane fire and a change of wind sparked it up into a bigger fire," he said.
"I'm checking the perimeter now, but it seems like no one is in danger and no properties are in trouble.
When asked about the eerie cracking caused by the bamboo Mr O'Connor said "the noise could go for a day or more" and added that he had never seen the decades old bamboo thickets catch fire, despite years on the farm.
Cars were still travelling along Commercial Rd during the blaze alongside it, navigating through the thick plumes of smoke.
Fire brigade trucks from Murwillumbah Rural Fire Service and Tweed Heads, Banora Point, Kingscliff and Murwillumbah Fire and Rescue were on scene after being called out at 2.25pm from a person located in O'Connor Dr, Murwillumbah.
