ONCE UPON a time, in an Australia that previously existed, agriculture was considered vital to human life, where people at one point knew that without the food and fibre producers, the masses would starve to death.
In today's Australia, this is no longer considered to be a truth, instead it has been replaced in the animal "liberationist" circles, a new belief system that agriculture is pointless and cruel and family farmers are just plain greedy.
Another new "truth" that has become ingrained in the animal activists, is Australia should be given back to nature as farmers and graziers are not "native" to this land, and are only intent on destroying the environment and the animals that where here first.
I very recently posted on the Bush Kids Facebook page a video that I originally shared last year that showed thousands of kangaroos in a paddock along a fence line.
My original preamble highlighted the fact that this was not an unusual sight and the numbers were unsustainable, and I gave reference to the kangaroo harvesting industry that will now only accept male kangaroos that are over 17kg, as the animal rights activists have caused such mayhem in the supermarkets - throwing dead kangaroo carcasses into the refrigerated meat sections, if any does were found in the kangaroo meat chain.
I pointed out that this method of kangaroo harvesting is causing an alarming imbalance where no females are taken or young bucks.
The result of this ill-conceived action by the activists, is out-of-control breeding among the kangaroos, due to no big males enforcing their dominance and keeping the young bucks out of the family groups.
I also pointed out that the Eastern Grey kangaroo is not native to the western areas, and have migrated out here due to the urban sprawl that has destroyed their habitat.
They have been able to build up in huge and unsustainable numbers due to the increased watering systems and improvement in pastures, and new immigrant to the western areas, the Eastern Grey is the first of the kangaroos that die in drought conditions.
That 60 second video that I posted, was enough to unleash a storm of hate on the Facebook page.
The animal activists demanded that I give my land back to the kangaroos as "they were here first not like the greedy farmer".
I was repeatedly told that farmers were the cause of all animal suffering, and the implication was that we were nothing but oxygen thieves.
I was even accused of "doing nothing to stop urban sprawl" and destroying the kangaroo habitat. Many of these activists supported their claims with "scientific fact" with link upon link to kangaroo studies.
They would not accept any first-hand knowledge regarding the kangaroo from the people that see them every day on their farms and grazing lands, or any information from those of us who are involved with agriculture and live and work in rural Australia, where the kangaroo lives, our information was completely irrelevant and wrong, and only "they" had the correct facts.
What stunned me the most was the level of hate that the activists have toward farmers and graziers.
No longer can the family farmer be trusted and agriculture was obsolete, everyone could just grow their own food.
The whole thread toward the farmer was woven with distrust, disgust and downright lies.
If this is the level of deception that is now being taught in our schools and universities toward the 3% of Australians that are primary producers, then it makes me wonder what future is there for the family farmer in Australia.
No farmers, no food.
