THE latest ABS data has confirmed what we already knew - the Surat Basin region is fast becoming an agricultural powerhouse for the Queensland and Australian economy.
Based on 2011 ABS data, the Toowoomba region ranked second in Australia (behind Moree Plains) with a gross value of agricultural production of $663.3 million, with the Western Downs local government area not far behind, placing seventh at $519.4 million.
With demand for food production expected to double in the coming decades, the region's proximity to the Port of Brisbane and Asian markets, along with its capacity for intensive agriculture, appears to put it in the box seat to capitalise on future growth and opportunity.
Economic development organisation Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise is establishing an export group to assist the agricultural industry better understand export opportunities and challenges.
The group will focus on facilitating a network of exporters within the region, sourcing expert briefings and information for the network, making representation to government on relevant trade issues as well as proactively supporting business to link with opportunities.
