GAVIN and Kirrily Iseppi originally had no plans to bring GK Red Ruba G40 along to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, but they're sure glad they did in hindsight.
The Iseppi's, who run GK Livestock at Dalby, just picked up both the Urquhart and Hordern trophies for supreme beef exhibit and best beef pair.
The red angus and simmental breeders were surprised, but ecstatic, about their cow taking out the clean sweep, but said she was the best they had bred and had a good feeling about her.
She was paired with a bull from Rach Wheeler's Wellington stud for the Hordern Trophy and despite a fairly vast age difference, they looked the part on the day.
Mrs Iseppi said it was only at the urging of fellow breeders that they decided to make her a late addition to the line-up.
"The cow that won, we basically had her retired but there was a red angus feature show at Pittsworth and we thought we should support it," she said.
"But it was mid January when we brought her in, which is really late. Usually it would be around the end of November, start of December, so it was a bit of an afterthought."
Despite the short preparation period, she was in such good condition at the feature show that other breeders couldn't believe she wasn't entered in the Sydney show.
Mrs Iseppi heeded their advice and applied for a late entry, which was denied due to a full card of entries.
The only way to get her in was to drop out one of their other entries, a promising red simmental cow that picked up second place last year.
The calf had been injured though, so it was at least an easy decision in the end.
