Decline in number of cattle but market improves

A YARDING of 1160 head was presented at Gracemere on May 19.

It comprised of 590 steers, 320 heifers, 220 cows, 5x5 cows and calves and 25 bulls.

Numbers declined due to wet weather conditions, however most sectors of the market improved considerably.

Steers to slaughter topped 304c/kg to average 289c/kg to see a market change of +12.

Steers 400-500kg topped 320c/kg to average 304c/kg, with a market change of +17, while steers 300-400kg topped 340c/kg to average 307c/kg, with the market remaining firm.

Those steers in the 200-300kg weight range had tops of 388c/kg to average 348c/kg to a firm market while steers under 200kg topped 414c/kg to average 379c/kg with a +15 change in the market.

Cows to slaughter topped 238c/kg to average 224c/kg while cows 400-450kg topped 244c/kg to average 213c/kg to have a market change of +13.

Heavy heifers had nice tops of 300c/kg to average 231c/kg, with a drop in the market of -21.

Heifers 300-400kg topped 304c/kg to average 256c/kg, firm. Heifers 200-300kg topped 328c/kg to average 284c/kg with a +6 lift in the market.

Heifers under 200kg topped 352c/kg to average 318c/kg, with a +31 lift in the market. Cows and calves weren't available to quote.

Bulls over 600kg topped 249c/kg to average 226c/kg, with bulls 450-600kg not available.

Bulls up to 450kg topped 328c/kg to average 276c/kg.

HIGHLIGHTS

Danastas Family, Middlemount - Sold a line of brahman cross ox to top at 285c/kg, weighing 568kg to return $1621 per head.

Charlie & Jason Randell, Mt Stuart - Sold prime brahman cows for 235c/kg, weighing 602kg, returning $1423 per head.

Wotonga, Nebo - Sold droughtmaster cross cows for 225c/kg, weighing 628kg, returning $1415 per head.

Lester Boyle, Yarwun - Sold No.6 light feeder steers for 306c/kg, weighing 362kg to return $1108 per head.

Hardy Woodard, Eidsvold - Sold brangus weaner steers to top at 388c, weighing 201kg to return $782 per head.

B & M Peacock, Goovigen - Santa cross weaner steers to top at 340c/kg to weigh 303kg and return $1031 per head.

Reg Booth, Raglan -Sold angus cross weaner steers for 386c/kg, weighing 211kg, returning $817 per head.

Teemburra Station, Pinnacle - Sold droughtmaster weaner steers topping at 410c/kg, weighing 212kg, returning $758 per head.

Amber Rees, Koumala - Sold brangus cross weaner heifers for 308c/kg, weighing 240kg to return $739 per head.
