AGE has in no way diminished the passion local business identity Brian Navin has for the Coffs Harbour community or his beloved Show Society.

Now 99 Mr Navin is still on the Show committee and until two years ago held the position of Public Officer.

He and his great friend Frances Blake are both revered members of the Show Society and have been instrumental in the show's rebirth and continued growth in recent years.

Both have given generous financial assistance to the Show Society to ensure that the largest and oldest local event, The Coffs Harbour Agricultural Show, will be relevant for generations to come.

He recently chipped in another $10,000, a sum which Show Treasurer Mark Foster said was the largest single donation in the events 99 year hisotry.

Born in Dorrigo in 1913 Brian was a keen horseman who often rode his horse to events at Bellingen and Coramba.

As a young working man eager to see what the rest of the world had to offer he made his way to the USA where a chance introduction led him to the Riviera Polo Club & Equestrian Center in the Santa Monica Canyon.

It was here that Brian met Australia's legendary sportsman Reginald Leslie 'Snowy' Baker and took a job with him.

While there he met Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant and Ronald Reagan whom Brian often rode alongside their stunt-double.

Brian's lifelong affinity with horses was interrupted during the Second World War when he enlisted in the Air Force and trained as a pilot.

He spent his time patrolling the Pacific Ocean for Japanese submarines rising to the rank of flight lieutenant.

Brian certainly had luck on his side when he walked away unscathed from a crashed Hudson bomber.

Brian played a large part in the formation Coffs Harbour, beginning his real estate career in Dorrigo in 1945 then moving to the coast in 1948 and entrenching himself in the community to which he is still giving his all, 68 years on.

In 1959 Brian was elected the Founding President of the Coffs Harbour Pony Club and for the best part of twenty years he was making the hard calls as the official judge of the Coffs Harbour Racing Club.

Brian was awarded a Life Membership of the Coffs Harbour Show Society many decades ago.

The 2013 Coffs Harbour Show is on April 26, 27 and 28.
