Banana Shire ripe to grow

THE next year will be an exciting time for the Banana Shire Council. We will start the year by moving into our new administration building.

The council is proud of its new building, not only because it is modern and roomy, but it has a new art gallery attached to the northern side of the building. The art gallery will be open to the public and available for art exhibitions.

Banana Shire Council will be concentrating on the State Government's Four Pillars for economic growth.

Agriculture - while the high Australian dollar is hampering the export side of agriculture, our own Teys Bros at Biloela is leading the Australian Teys Group in bone-out rates and has the least number of lost work days. This is a tremendous effort for a small plant.

Resources - Coal is going through a lean time, however Evolution Mine is the fourth-largest gold producer in Australia. We have all the gas lines going through the shire in 2013.

Tourism - As Mayor, I believe this is the sleeping giant. We have so much potential ready to be uncovered and developed in the shire, ranging from the Dawson River in the west to the Callide Dam in the east, farmstays and tourist parks scattered in between.

Construction - 2013 will be a year where the council will make a concerted effort to attract construction and development to the shire. With Gladstone booming it is an ideal time for our shire to accommodate any overflow.
