Seven and Nine in awards battle, but Aunty leads Logies nods

Can Andy Lee, left, win a Gold Logie like his best mate Hamish Blake?
Can Andy Lee, left, win a Gold Logie like his best mate Hamish Blake?

THE ABC has stayed on top of this year's Logie nominations tally after this afternoon's final release of the Most Popular categories.

Aunty received 22 nominations across the 11 peer-reviewed Most Outstanding categories, published in TV Week today, and the national broadcaster is up for another seven nods in the viewer-voted Most Popular categories.

But it's Seven and Nine's ratings battle that is set to play out across the 56th annual awards night.

Ten's golden girls Carrie Bickmore and Asher Keddie are up for the Gold Logie against Gap Year jokester Andy Lee, whose partner-in-crime Hamish Blake took out the top honour in 2012, The Block host Scott Cam, Home and Away's Steve Peacocke and the ABC's Essie Davis.

Seven's ratings juggernaut My Kitchen Rules will face off against the previous two series of Nine's renovation show The Block for Most Popular Reality Program, while The X Factor and The Voice will do battle for Most Popular Light Entertainment Program.

The ABC's funny man Chris Lilley will have his work cut out for him in the Most Popular Actor category against soap stars Peacocke and Dan Ewing, Packed to the Rafters' Hugh Sheridan and Offspring's recently departed "hot doctor" Matthew Le Nevez.

Fresh from its ASTRA Awards wins, Foxtel's prison drama Wentworth is up for three of the Most Outstanding awards, including the Silver Logie for Drama Series.

The full list of 2014 Logie nominees was announced this afternoon at Melbourne's Crown Towers at an event hosted by TV Week editor Emma Nolan, Julia Morris and Dr Chris Brown.

Next month's award will also feature a new prize for the recipient of the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding Newcomer.

The winner will snag a potentially career-changing trip to Hollywood through Australians in Film, including a round-trip airfare to Los Angeles, a one-year scholarship at the Stella Adler Acting School and mentoring with "prominent industry contacts".

The Logies will be held on April 27 at Melbourne's Crown Entertainment Complex.
