WHO can remember New Years Day 2016? Seems like yesterday? Did you achieve your 2016 goals? If not, you are not alone. It is estimated that only 8% of people actually achieve their goals.

Goal setting is extremely important for our emotional well being. Our brains are essentially lazy and need direction and focus to avoid ruminating which could lead you to dark spaces of anxiety and even depression.

But what can you do differently in 2017 to help you achieve these goals?

It's not so much whether these goals are achieved (whilst this is desirable, it is not essential), it's about having that focus.

A couple of tips about effective goals setting for 2017.

Visualise your goals. What will goal achievement look, smell, taste and feel like. Make it real to increase clarity and motivation to achieve your goals.

Watch your language! Our brains are motivated by gaining things and threatened by losing things. So don't set goals to, for example, lose weight - rather set goals to gain health, self-esteem and energy.

Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-based, enjoyable and relevant - the smarter model.

Write your goals down! It helps to remember your goals and why you set them - place reminders about these goals on post-it notes or even in a personal mantra to keep them front of mind.

A goal without a plan is a dream, so develop an action plan to achieve your goals. Break these plans down into tiny steps starting off with the things you can do right away.

Share your goals with other key people in your life. There is great value in having an accountability coach to keep you honest, focused and maybe share the pain.

Monitor progress towards your goals.

Seek help in accompanying your goals.

Be kind to yourself. We all have times during the year when we lose focus and attention of goals. Don't beat yourself up. Rather; regroup, refocus and reward yourself for getting back on track.

Set mini goals and reward yourself on positive progress.

Using these tips will improve your goal clarification and achievement. Remember though that goal setting is the easy bit. Their achievement is all about motivation, focus, rhythm and routine. Develop that and you will have a productive, satisfying and happy 2017.
