Improving merino genetic selection

THE use of objective data in ram selection has delivered a profitable improvement in the genetics of the TA Field Estates' merino flocks, with fleeces now two micron finer on average across the board. Fleece and body weights have been maintained - and on some properties improved - across flocks totalling more than 40,000 breeding ewes in three locations. This genetic improvement has ensured the profitability of the TA Field Estates' sheep and wool activities has been maintained, despite extremes of seasons and ongoing increases in input costs.
