Treated plantation timber shines

Less vineyard plantings resulted in less round post sales.

A RECENT study to ascertain how big the outdoor and infrastructure timber market is in Australia has provided some interesting results.

Forests, Wood Product Association (FWPA), which conducted the survey, revealed that over the past 10 years the overall market volume had increased considerably. Sawn treated plantation timber produced the largest growth particularly for landscaping sleepers and sawn structural timber had increased considerably.

The study showed the round post market had declined to half its size since 2007 which could be attributed to severe droughts causing less new vines to be planted in vineyards. There had also been a reduction in hardwood round for the use of transmission power poles.

Treated pine was by far the most popular having approximately 85% of the entire market. The balance was made up from Aussie hardwoods.
