A 20-year-old woman who manages one of the largest businesses of its type in the Queensland tourist industry has been recognised for her work.

Melanie Walsh, of Longreach Tourist Park, has won The Simon Warner Memorial Young Achiever of the Year Award.

Ms Walsh manages and operates the caravan park with a team of seven to 20 employees.

Following in the footsteps of her parents, who own and operate other caravan parks, Ms Walsh started at the bottom and has worked from the most menial cleaning tasks through to her position today where she is the park's Approved Manager of a Licensed Venue.

The park has a restaurant and bar where Melanie also assists.

She completed a Certificate III in Retail Travel Sales with exceptional results earlier this year and plans to study further to Diploma level.

This was the third time in a row this award was given to young achievers from Central Queensland caravan parks.

Out of six winners in the past 10 years four had come from Central Queensland.

Previous local winners were Andrew Foreman, formerly of Lake Maraboon, Emerald (now managing a park in South Australia), Amanda Jennings of Capricorn Caves, and the late Simon Warner of the former Rockhampton Ramblers Motel and Caravan Park.

In 2002 he was posthumously awarded the Inaugural Award which now bears his name.

And the 2012 award "Outstanding Contribution by a Non-member" of the Queensland Caravan Parks Association went to Mary Carroll, the CEO of Capricorn Enterprise.

The group agreed Ms Carroll had for many years played a consistent role in her positions on the Capricorn Coast and wider Capricorn region in supporting the aims of the Association .
