Ekka dumps our ice cream

TASTEBUDS at this year's Ekka are set to be sorely disappointed after organisers chose not to use Childers' most famous ice cream for their strawberry sundaes.

While Mammino Ice Cream received tremendous feedback last year, owner Anthony Mammino said organisers had "decided to go in a different direction".

"It is upsetting, but I think they have chosen to go with a cheaper product," Mr Mammino said.

"We couldn't supply it at the price they wanted.

"We said all along that we had a very good-quality product."

Mr Mammino said while the news was disappointing, last year's experience at the Ekka had done plenty of good for the family owned business.

"It's been instrumental in securing us other contracts," he said.

Mr Mammino said despite the set back, the business would still head to the Ekka as usual.

"We'll still have a site at the Woolworths Pavilion," he said.

"The hardest part for us will be being there and having everyone ask why we're not doing the strawberry sundaes."

Sales of Mammino Ice Cream at last year's Ekka went so well the company nearly ran out of ice cream, and had to make an extra 1000 litres on top of the 11,500 litres they took just to keep up with the demand and long lines of eager buyers.
