Bird auction is set to fly
IF the birds are as fancy as their breed names then there is no question this year's Stanthorpe Poultry Club auction will be impressive.
The 2012 auction boasts a line up ranging from Australian Game Bantams to Old English Game Bantams and Silkies, Seabrights and Sussexs.
For more mainstream buyers there will be ducks, turkeys, geese, Gouldian Finches, parrots and a range of incubators.
SPC president Bruce Haslingden said the annual auction was renowned for offering a wide selection of birds.
"We have one of the oldest of the rare breeds of poultry on auction - the Silkie, Marco Polo wrote about seeking Silkies during his travels in the Orient in 1200 A.D," Mr Haslingden said.
"These birds are wonderful little layers and a great pet for children."
He said this year the auction was operating on a cash-only basis and buyers were required to bring their own cages to transport birds home.
"There will be something for everybody," he said.
The event will be held at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds with catering provided by the Ringmaster's Cafe, which will be open for breakfast from 7am. The pavillion will be open for viewing from 8.30am with the auction to start at 9am.
A total of 231 lots will be on offer with individual birds displayed via video screen during the sale.
